This Simple Tool Shows What’s Hiding Behind Your Wall

A custom laser-cut wall sign becomes a practical demonstration of scanning drywall before drilling into hidden studs, wires, or pipes.

Patrick builds a custom layered wall sign and uses the installation to demonstrate why the last step of a shop project deserves the same care as fabrication. The wood and acrylic components are prepared on the xTool P3, assembled, and readied for mounting.

Before drilling, the Walabot DIY 2 is connected to a phone and calibrated against the wall. Its visual scan is used to identify framing and warn about other objects behind the drywall instead of relying only on measurements or a basic stud-finder indication.

The scan helps Patrick choose mounting points that support the sign without blindly drilling near a wire or pipe. The process is especially useful for heavier wall pieces, unfamiliar rooms, and installations where a misplaced hole can cause far more work than the original project.

This sponsored demonstration keeps the tool in the context of a real maker workflow: design, cut, assemble, inspect the installation area, and only then fasten the finished piece. The practical lesson is simple—knowing what is behind the surface is part of completing the project safely.
