Pricing Your Projects Doesn’t Have To Be Difficult

Patrick’s transparent walkthrough of the formula he and his wife refined for material costs, labor, shop incidentals, and profit.

Maker pricing worksheet and calculator used to quote workshop projects

When it comes to pricing your items, it can sometimes be difficult to figure out exactly what you should charge. While I can’t help you determine your worth, I can show you how I use an hourly rate to work out what I should charge for a given item.

Knowing your material costs

I like to break sheet goods down into a cost per square inch. Once that reference is saved, I can use the finished project’s dimensions to get a much more useful material cost than guessing off the top of my head.

The current calculator

The Laser Workshop’s calculator is now the feature-packed, actively updated place I use for quoting projects. It grew out of the pricing formula explained here.
