How to Engrave Slate With a 30W MOPA Fiber Laser

The alignment, testing, settings, and cleanup workflow Patrick used for a detailed slate-coaster engraving.

Before engraving the final design, run a test grid. Slate can vary, and the point of the grid is to find a crisp result on the actual blanks you have instead of treating one set of numbers as universal.

Settings used for this project

  • 500 mm/s at 20% power
  • 100 kHz frequency and 60 ns Q-pulse
  • 0.05 mm line interval with a 45-degree crosshatch
  • Bidirectional flood fill

These are project-specific starting points, not universal settings. Test the actual blank and keep the machine in focus before the final run.
